Listening to Our People: Staff Perspectives on Sustainability
Sustainability isn’t just a strategy—it’s something our staff are actively shaping every day. Insights from the latest staff survey highlight a community that is both committed to sustainable living and eager to go further, with clear ideas about how we can continue to improve.

A strong culture of everyday sustainability
Encouragingly, sustainable behaviours are already well embedded. The vast majority of staff report consistently switching off lights and electrical equipment when not in use, and many regularly use reusable bottles and reduce waste in their daily routines.
There is also clear evidence of a growing circular mindset. Many colleagues donate unwanted items, purchase second-hand goods, and carefully check recycling labels before disposal.
These everyday actions show that sustainability is becoming a natural part of how staff live and work.
Strong personal commitment
The survey also reveals high levels of personal commitment to sustainability, with many staff describing themselves as committed or very committed.
For some, this commitment is driven by environmental values; for others, it is linked to efficiency, cost savings, or a desire to live more consciously. Either way, it reflects a shared understanding that small actions can make a meaningful difference.
Opportunities to strengthen engagement
While awareness of sustainability initiatives is fairly widespread, levels of engagement vary across different areas. Some staff feel closely connected to the University’s work in areas such as energy conservation, wildlife management, and embedding sustainability into teaching, while others would welcome clearer communication and more opportunities to get involved.
This highlights an important opportunity: strengthening engagement by making sustainability initiatives more visible, accessible, and relevant to everyday roles.

Building momentum together
What stands out most is the positive momentum already underway. Staff are not only adopting sustainable practices but are also open to doing more and contributing ideas for improvement.
By building on this strong foundation—supporting behavioural change, amplifying awareness, and creating more opportunities for involvement—we can continue to grow a culture where sustainability is shared, visible, and impactful.
Together, we’re not just setting ambitions—we’re bringing them to life through the actions of our people.
