Skills for Tomorrow: The Boys are back!

Third and final students blog of the day from four young men from St. Marys.

Chatty as ever they told me they learnt a lot today, however below their experiences and opinions are stated! It’s much more exciting hearing their day from their own point of view!

Piers, Aaron, Henry and Collumbus collaborativley crafted:

We are three students from St Marys high school in Lugwardine. We traveled on a mini bus from school to the university of Worcester. On the bus, we listened to some sick bass drops. When we arrived, we had a talk about the Skywalk, a bridge that goes across the whole of Worcester.

Our first activity was about a Roman Villa found in Worcester. We had to design and plan where a visitor centre would be, in order for people to visit it easily. We had a Jamie’s Italiano shop to introduce visitors to the town centre. We also had a canal system in place to have an alternative form of travel. Jamie’s Italiano received 10/10 feedback.

We then went on to do a food workshop. We were given lists with ingredients for some kind of food (or drink) and we had to guess what the ingredients would make. After we had to make a poster to advertise our food which was, ‘Fudge-o-Licious’. I would’ve liked to have made it!

Next up was a workshop on the Earth’s resources. We learnt that Earth overshoot day is the day where we use more resources than the Earth can replenish. We need to slow down our use!. This took place on August the 19th 2014. We then went on to create a poster about the Earth. We wrote that there will be nothing left unless we save the planet. We kept the paper short and sweet like our friend Columbus. After lunch, we went into the main hall where an assortment of subjects were being shown. We saw a 3D printed and a battery powered car, we were also interviewed about our day. Then we wrote this blog!

We all had a great day, and learnt quite a bit! More than I thought we would!

Morgan interjecting again! All the children today were so enthusiastic and I can’t wait for tomorrow, skills for tomorrow day 2!

In the Sustainable Food Workshop, all of the students reacted and took on the tasks brilliantly, the group that commented within the blog that created ‘Fudge-O-Licious’ were one of these that made both myself and other Sustainability Mentor Katie Amey, very hungry for sweets. Everyone within our workshop was impressed with their different ideas for the sustainable packaging for their chosen sweets.

Had a fab morning with schools from all over the area coming into a workshop I’ve helped with looking at ‘Local & Sustainable Food’.. Some really creative solutions from the schoolchildren and it’s all been done in a great atmosphere here at the UW Riverside building.

Fudge-o-licous!! What a fantastic idea and brand name! I have joined with Boffy Arts Markets to exhibit my small fudge business today. I first started selling my fudge on local food and farmers’ markets and continue to do so as well as supplying to shops locally. This all goes toward helping to keep a strong, local economy. I hope you have enjoyed learning about business sustainability here today and of course, eating my chocolate coated fudge!!

It was a great experience and I was excited to be able to teach the students about jobs concerning sustainability. A lot of the students came in with knowledge about sustainability but had no idea about the jobs they could find in this field. But they were all very interested in learning and were eager to learn more about them!!

I agree the event was a lot of fun and it was exciting to work with students on their “Skills for Tomorrow” As a University Student I was able to connect with the kids and talk about all of the opportunities that are available when they decided to go to University!
